Developmental Work: Plan of Procedures

The Hospital Bed Rail Device is a device that is being designed to prevent entrapment in all 7 danger zones in hospital beds. Entrapment is any case where a patient gets trapped within the bed rails of the bed frame in a hospital bed. The 7 danger zones include: within the rail, under the rail, between the rail and the mattress, between rails, at the end of the rail, between split bed rails, between the end of the rail and the side edge of the head or foot board, between the head and footboard and the mattress.

Procedures for Vinyl Covers

Before you begin working, make sure that you have a clear work space that is at least 50”x86”, and has a working electrical outlet that will be used to sew the vinyl together.

1. Using a scissor cut the vinyl material into 4 pieces. Two 28”x37” pieces and two 29”x86” pieces.

2.Take the two 28” x37” pieces and mark off the folded areas and areas to be cut with a fabric marker or chalk line using pattern 1 as a guide.

3. Take the two 28” x86” pieces and do the same following pattern 2.

4.Using scissors or a straight blade cut out holes on one of the 28”x37” pieces as shown in pattern 3. This will serve as the piece for the footboard. CAREFUL DO NOT CUT A HOLE IN BOTH 28”x37” PIECES BECAUSE ONE WILL SERVE AS THE HEADBOARD.

5.Using a scissor or a straight blade cut out the holes on both of the 29”x86” pieces as shown in pattern 4. These two pieces will serve as the two side pieces.

6.After you finish cutting the holes, begin folding and sewing the 29”x 78” pieces as shown in patterns 5 and 6.

7.Do the same with the 29”x37” pieces as shown in patterns 7 and 8.

Procedures for Polyester Mesh Inserts

Before you begin, make sure that you have a clear work area that is at least 54”x70” with a working electrical outlet for a sewing machine.

1.Using scissors or a straight blade cut the mesh into two 6”x66” pieces.

2.Using scissors or a straight blade cut the remaining mesh into one 6”x29” piece.

3.Using a sewing machine or needle and thread sew zippers along the top and bottom of the mesh pieces as shown in pattern 5.

Procedures for Foam Structure

Before you begin make sure that you are wearing safety goggles and have a clear work space that is at least 24”x90”.

1.Using scissors or a straight blade cut 2” High Density Foam into two 7”x78” pieces. CAUTION FOAM SHOULD NOT BE CUT WITH A HOT WIRE BECAUSE IT WILL EMIT TOXIC FUMES.

2.Using scissors or a straight blade cut 2” High Density Foam into two 7”x29” pieces. CAUTION FOAM SHOULD NOT BE CUT WITH A HOT WIRE BECAUSE IT WILL EMIT TOXIC FUMES.

3.Using a sander or a straight blade cut 4” High Density Foam into two 5”x78” pieces. CAUTION FOAM SHOULD NOT BE CUT WITH A HOT WIRE BECAUSE IT WILL EMIT TOXIC FUMES.

4.Using a sander or a straight blade cut 4” High Density Foam into two 5”x29” pieces. CAUTION FOAM SHOULD NOT BE CUT WITH A HOT WIRE BECAUSE IT WILL EMIT TOXIC FUMES.

5.Using a sander or straight blade cut holes in one of the 2” High Density Foam Pieces that is 7”x29” as shown in pattern 1. CAUTION FOAM SHOULD NOT BE CUT WITH A HOT WIRE BECAUSE IT WILL EMIT TOXIC FUMES.

6.Using a sander or straight blade cut holes into both of the 2” High Density Foam Pieces that are 7”70” as shown in pattern 2 . CAUTION FOAM SHOULD NOT BE CUT WITH A HOT WIRE BECAUSE IT WILL EMIT TOXIC FUMES.

7.Using a sander, sand the all four of the 4” High Density Foam Slab pieces as shown in patterns 3 and 4. CAUTION FOAM SHOULD NOT BE CUT WITH A HOT WIRE BECAUSE IT WILL EMIT TOXIC FUMES.

8.Using heavy duty spray adhesive, shake the can, and spray the bottom 4” pieces and attach the top 2” pieces as shown in Figure 1. Make sure you use spray adhesive outside or in a well ventilated area.

9.Let pieces dry for 4-5 minutes.

Final Assembly Procedures

1.Take the foam structure pieces that are attached together with the spray adhesive and dried, and slide them into the vinyl covers as shown in Figure 1.

2.Sew the 2nd side of the zipper to the extra vinyl material that will get sewn onto the vinyl covers as shown in Figure 3.

3.Using a needle and thread sew the high density foam into the vinyl material as shown in Figure 2.

4.Using a sewing machine or needle and thread, sew the Velcro pieces onto the vinyl material in their appropriate spaces following pattern 6.
